Unlock an AudioVox 5600 for free

Update: I don’t have a tip jar, as I support myself in what I say. That being said, the below would normally cost you $30 - $60 elsewhere. Therefore, if you were going to spend some cash, and this saved it, please use that money to donate for the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. I’d like to recommend these that I support (both images will direct you to the appropriate donation page):

[Updated Oct. 10 2005 to freshen up the directions... here is the original article for unlocking an AudioVox 5600.]

Background: The following comes from my scouring of the Internet to find out how to unlock an AudioVox 5600 (or SMT5600) that was locked to the AT&T (Cingular Blue) network. I had to do this as Cingular does not unlock their phones on the AT&T network, and I needed to put in a local SIM while on a trip to Brazil. T-Mobile will apparently unlock your phones by just calling, and is probably a safer way to go. But for everyone else who is stuck, and doesn’t want to rely on possibly dodgey sites that ask for money via paypal, continue on!

Note: actually doing the following probably voids your warranty (I don’t know as I never read it), and botching it could well render your phone unusable. But it worked for me, even with a few missteps I didn’t include here.

Microsoft people: This doesn’t work for Magneto, but apparently upgrading to Magneto seems to unlock your phone anyway… try it first. BTW, if you’re thinking of upgrading, I don’t recommend it.

You need the following three files:

  1. aeconfig.zip
  2. resetSecurity.zip
  3. SPV Services

Or to save you some time (and in case the above are down), you can just get them all in one big zip: UnlockAudioVox5600Apps.zip

What you’ll need:

  • A SIM card on the network your AudioVox is locked to. For example, if you’re locked to AT&T (Cingular Blue network) then you’ll need an AT&T SIM card. For people who bought their phone off e-bay or something, find a friend, as you need one of these to proceed!
  • A SIM card on some other network to make sure things worked. Any network will do. Again, find a buddy.

Here’s what you do:

  1. Plug your AudioVox into your computer via the USB cable that came with it. Open an explorer window via ActiveSync and browse the top level directory of the SmartPhone… you should see directories like Temp and Storage.
  2. Extract aeconfig.zip, say to C:\unlock5600. DO NOT SIMPLY OPEN THE .ZIP AND TRY TO COPY FILES TO YOUR SMARTPHONE, IT DOES NOT WORK! You’ll get a folder named “unlock-all” which contains two directories, StartMenu and Temp, along with a manual. The manual is almost correct for the 5600. What you want to do is:
    1. Put the “Disable Security” file in StartMenu under \Storage\Windows\Start Menu\ in your 5600.
    2. Put “AEConfig.exe” and “DisableSecurity.xml” in Temp in \Temp in your 5600. Do not reboot your 5600, as it will erase these files in \Temp!
    3. Go to Start on your 5600, then select Disable Security and run it. Phase 1 done. If you don’t see it via the start menu, use the File Manager to run it. Sometimes it takes a bit for the Start Menu to re-read the directory and include things.
  3. Open resetSecurity.zip and extract the files on your computer somewhere. I’ll say C:\unlock5600, but feel free to replace that with anything you like.
  4. On your computer, go to Start -> Run and type “cmd” for a DOS prompt. Change directories to the directory you put the files of resetSecurity (e.g. cd c:\unlock5600 using our example).
  5. Run RapiConfig as follows from the cmd prompt:
    % RapiConfig.exe /p ResetSecurity.xml
This will unlock your phone to install new apps (needed for the next step).
  6. Confirm it works by putting “CheckLock.exe” in the \Temp dir of your 5600 and running it by going to Start -> File Manager on your AudioVox and selecting CheckLock.exe under \Temp. It should say “Your phone is not locked.”
    Phase 2 End.
  7. Open up SPV-Services.zip and copy the files somewhere (say c:\unlock5600).
  8. Copy the Cert.cab into \Temp of your smartphone
  9. From your smartphone Start -> File Manager, browser to \Temp and run Cert.cab. Install the program.
  10. From your computer, run SPVServices.exe. Click on the SIMLock Toggle button and type AGREE. Don’t worry about the “Doesn’t work on AudioVox” as this did for this purpose.
  11. Unlock your AudioVox by clicking on the button. End Phase 3.
  12. Test out your new unlocked AudioVox with a friend’s SIM card on another network (I used T-Mobile). You will need to power down the phone, take out the card, put the new one in, and power up. If you see “Network locked, enter unlock code” then something didn’t work. If you see the normal home page with the carrier’s name, you’re golden.

Troubleshooting:

  • Unknown error -2147467259 in read operation. I don’t know why this happens. Some people have reported success by re-trying all of the previous steps after rebooting the SmartPhone. Others have suggested it’s because Cert.cab wasn’t installed, just copied over to \Temp. If you get this, please report it in the comments and let us know if you’re able to figure it out. UPDATEA post on the SPV Developers Forum appears to answer this by describing how to: resolve the read error by manually changing two registry keys. A file is included in the post to update the registry. Hat tip to Volkmar!
  • Can’t copy files to SmartPhone. Remember, you have to extract files to some directory, then copy them. You can’t just copy directly… some lame bug in Windows.

Update: I don’t have a tip jar, as I support myself in what I say. That being said, the below would normally cost you $30 - $60 elsewhere. Therefore, if you were going to spend some cash, and this saved it, please use that money to donate for the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. Hello Joe,

How did you get past the SIMLocled Network unlock page after you boot with the t-mobile sim.

  2. walter Says:

Thanks for the posting! Am using a friends 5600 now, and I am hooked! Searching thru ebay right now to find one of my own.

    Hope I can unlock it…

    Cheers

  3. greg Says:

Thanks!!! worked like a champ. I found a few sites that had bits and pieces of this, but you have made it so much easier. My AT&T 5600 phone now works with Cingular and T-Mobile!!

  4. Bill Webb Says:

It is NOT often that someone really gets it ALL RIGHT like you’ve done here. You could teach Gates a big lesson in properly working utilities and distribution.

GREAT JOB AND THANK YOU SO MUCH…I LOVE MY NEW PHONE.

Erik, thanks a lot - instructions worked great, first try! Super-job

    Erik

Just went through the 6th or 7th level of hell with cingular trying to get my ATT A-vox smt5600… told that I would have to buy a new one… followed your steps and voila! I can use this one!!

    YOU ROCK!

  9. Manny Says:

You Rock! Worked exactly as stated–flawlessly

  10. Tony Says:

Thanks, Erik. I haven’t unlocked my 5600 yet, but plan to in order to sell it. I noticed Walter (posted 7/25/05) is interested in buying. Somebody make me an offer.

  11. Chuck Botwin Says:

    Dear Selberg.org,

    Please help.
My problem is this. After reading you instructions and seeing the comments, I ran out and bought a 5600. I can not get past step 2.3, because I can not go to start on my phone. All that is on the screen is “network locked. Please input unlock code.” I do not have a Cingular sim card, only T-mobile. I have a T-mobile Ipaq, but it is too cumbersome, so I thought this would be a better solution. I tried this with and without my T mobile sim card in. Any suggestions???

    Chuck
    [phone number removed]

  12. chuck Says:

Please take my name and phone number down. Thank you.

P.S. bought the code and software for $36.00 from http://imei-check.co.uk/ and it worked great.

  13. Tom Says:

I guess Chuck solved his problem. If you have to have an ATT SIM card in the phone to perform these steps, perhaps some alternatives would be to borrow a SIM from a friend with ATT service or perhaps even purchase a prepaid ATT SIM to use. I have no idea how much that would cost…maybe the $36 unlock code and software he purchased is cheaper.

A question…I have T-Mobile service. When I purchased an unlocked phone previously, I had to have T-Mobile text message some configuration settings before I could use T-zones and picture messaging. My new phone was a Motorola V-400, and the settings used by T-Mobile’s V-300 phone worked. But what about the Audiovox 5600? Are configuration settings needed for full T-Mobile functionality?

  14. TerrorChild Says:

    THanks worked like a charm.

Now do i leave the “Disable Security” in the start menu ?

I noticed all those in the Temp dir have been deleted automatically.

    Thanks

  15. Marshall Says:

Easily unlocked the phone with the help of a friend who had a cingular sim card. I have t-mobile and i can recieve messages but i can not send them now, any suggestions? Thanks, Marshall

  16. Steve Says:

I have the same question. I am in the US and am wondering if I can make this work with Tmobile. I just purchased a 5600 off ebay and would love to bypass paying for the unlock. Appreciate the great walk-through.

  17. Blossom Says:

I am stuck at Phase 1, it will not let me cut or copy the disable security file in the start menu. anyone have any suggestions?

  18. Buzz Says:

    RE: Marshall-

Just got the phone, seems sweet. Still working on the unlock (same t-mobil problem). Found a site that I think will help your problem. Link here

    http://www.mobilegadgetnews.com/index.php?showtopic=6620

    Hope it helps!

  19. Erik Selberg Says:

Blossom — I didn’t understand. You can’t paste in the disable security file into the start menu?

This might work (although it’s the same thing as above, just done differently ;)

Copy the disable security shortcut into \Temp
On the phone, Go Start -> File Manager and then move it into the start menu location (\Storage\Windows\Start Menu\)
    It should be there now.

  20. Randy Says:

Itried it and it worked great. I switched me AT&T 5600 to a Cingular 5600 in 5 minutes. I had no problems with any of the software or instructions. Thanks!!!

  21. Blossom Says:

    Erik,
That is correct. I can’t copy the “disable security” file in Start Menu (the details say it is a shortcut file) of aeconfig.zip under Storage\windows\start menu of my 5600. It won’t even let me copy into the temp folder. I copied the “disable security” file to my computer and tried to then copy it into the start menu of my 5600. It worked BUT it gave me a message that it couldn’t copy all the information from the original file. The icon doesn’t even look the same, so I stopped there. Should I move on from there? I have a cingular 5600 phone and trying to use my T-mobile chip. I feel incompetent, please help!

  22. Uncle Says:

Thanks a lot Erik! Worked like a charm! Just one question- Should I delete “Disable Security” file from following folder \Storage\Windows\Start Menu\ on my 5600 after all?

    Thank you very much!

  23. Zane Says:

Worked like a charm! Thanks for making it clear.

  24. thomas Says:

Can’t complain about unlocking procedure from Joe! Except I had to use DOS as I haven’t had to do it more than 15 years ago.

  25. thomas Says:

I hope everyone would know that I am joking on the dos thing from previous comment. Actually I felt good when using dos and result came out successfull ’cause kind of remind me the old days. Anyway, many many thanks to you!!! :)

  26. Eric Says:

Brilliant! Thanks a million for these great steps!

  27. Brian Says:

I am having the same problem as Blossom - I can’t copy or cut the “Disable Security” folder (which appears to be a shortcut) from my PC to the 5600. I tried moving the files from the Temp folder to the 5600 Temp folder and it won’t let me do that either. As soon as I click on the file, all I get is the circle with the line through it and it won’t allow the move. What’s up with that? Any other suggestions? I really don’t know of any reason why it won’t allow the move. Thanks for any help you guys can offer!

  28. Ajey Says:

I am unable to access the start button on the phone, since i get locked up with the message box which asks me to enter the unlock code. please let me know how i can access the start button. I dont have the original sim card

  29. J Says:

Worked WONDERFULLY on (2) SMT 5600’s! One Cingular one (mine) and one AT&T one (my bosses). Tested both with T-Mobile, AT&T, and Cingular SIMS before and after. Went from “Network Locked: Enter Unlock Code” to pulling signal afterwards.

Saved me $40 from buying this same thing online at those UK unlock sites. THANK YOUUUUUUU!

  30. J Says:

Oh, Update from above. We did the instructions above via Bluetooth connection instead of USB, and it worked fine as well. Just FYI for all of ya’all. :)

  31. Paul Says:

Same problem as Blossom and Brian. Can’t drag copy or paste. Anyone have any thoughts? It is like the file / directory is write protected.

  32. Some guy Says:

Here are a few notes I’d add:

    1. For those who can’t seem to copy files to their SMT 5600, DON’T FORGET to first *EXTRACT* the files you download here.
    2. Don’t put in your SIM card until you are all done unlocking. You’ll need a native (e.g. Cingular SIM for Cingular phone, AT&T SIM for AT&T phone, etc.) SIM card to get the Start menu to get past Phase 1. The native SIM card can be the “empty” one that came with the phone, or a friend’s.

I did this for t-mobile, worked great!

  33. Michael Says:

    Worked perfectly!

I havne’t tested it with a different sim card yet, but i’m sure it will work. Saved me some $$ for sure.

  34. Paul Says:

    Golden! Thanks to Some Guy!

I had unzipped the files but not extracted them. Worked like a charm.

  35. Tim Says:

Thank you so much for the attention to detail while writing the instructions. Outstanding work.

  36. Morten Says:

    Hi,

So I unlocked my SMT 5600 from AT&T Wireless. Is there a way to re-lock it to the Cingular Wireless network? I tried to download the xpress mail personal edition and it does not work properly. My synchronized e-mails come in as a text message and it looks like garbage. Is it because the phone is still set up to use mmode?

    Morten

  37. ERIC Says:

THIS IS DAMN AWESOME!! I bought a cingular 5600 a week ago and was told it wouldn’t work with my ATT chip, but man did I prove them wrong! THANKS SO MUCH. I almost paid $60 for some shmuck to unlock it for me. Hi Five for doing this. THANKS!! Everything worked perfectly.

  38. James Says:

Worked like a charm. Thanks for hte how-to.

  39. Nima Says:

Thank you so much. Your detailed instructions worked flawlessly. I purchased the new phone on eBay - and it was locked (to AT&T). I have T-Mobile. I used your instructions and now the phone works great on T-Mobile. Really appreciate it!

  40. Orlando Gonzalez Says:

This unlock thing worked ok but i was able to load only the 1st and 3rd step and i even inserted a sim from suncom and it worked fine but the 2nd step was imposible for me to load. It always gave me /your phone is locked/ why could this be and do i need this to install new applications? because i am trying to download a new apps like Opera Web Browser and it does not let me install it. So if you can help me pass step 2 ill be very glad fell free to send me an e-mail.

  41. Toygar Says:

You absolutely rock man. This was a fool proof guide of how to unlock this phone.u have no idea how much i appreciate this guide.GOD BLESS YOU.

  42. Paul Says:

    Worked! Outstanding!

Now - if I could just get rid of the MMODE stuff. I am now using the phone on a T-Mobile network. I would like to rid my SMT5600 of all ATT Wireless content.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  57. Erik Selberg Says:

peter — unlocked means it’s unlocked for any and all other providers.

I used TIM myself. They’re one of the carriers in Brazil.

  58. Alan Says:

peter: Sorry, but no matter what you do, your phone isn’t going to work with Verizon, nor Sprint. Both those carriers use CDMA (code-division multiple access) radio technology, whereas Cingular/AT&T and T-Mobile use a different standard called GSM (global system for mobile communication). The easiest way to tell whether a handset is GSM or CDMA is that GSM phones have a SIM (subscription information module) smartcard and CDMA phones do not.

For the most part, GSM is the standard in Europe and Japan; CDMA is more widespread in South America and mainland Asia. Only here in the U.S. is there widespread use of both systems–we never have been good at agreeing on a single standard.

  59. Erik Selberg Says:

Ah, fair point… if Verizon doesn’t support GSM (and I just spend a few moments looking and Alan is right, they don’t appear to yet, at least in the US) then you can’t buy a SIM card to get onto Verizon’s network. Same is true of any other non-GSM network (for example, everything in Japan).

For what it’s worth, re: the above South Ameria / Asia comment — as I mentioned, GSM worked just fine in Brazil (including Salvador, on the coast, Brasilia, Manaus (heart of the Amazon), and Sao Paulo). It also works just fine in metropolitan China — Beijing and Shanghai. Your mileage may vary in the off-beat areas (certainly, there was no signal deep on the Amazon, but that’s probably due to lack of coverage period).

  60. Joe Says:

everything worked great up until the spv website, i typed agree and I got an error, all the other steps are done because the lockcheck said the phone was unlocked, if anyone has had trouble with the spv website and can give me a resolution , i would really appreciate it.

When I ran the SPV app, I didn’t get a EULA/Agree page. It went right to a page that said “All OK, RAPI Init was successful :)”. Is that OK? There is a hyperlink on the left that takes me to the EULA/Agree page with the “don’t use this on an Audiovox” stuff. Do I need to do that, or does the original “ALL OK” page tell me I did it right?

  64. garypen Says:

Ignore my previous post. It appears I do have to click the SIMLock Tool hyperlink. I went through the AGREE process, and I got a “SimLock change success” message. So, I guess I’m cool.

Just to make things easier for others:
Be aware that during the final SPV phase, you may not see a SimLock Toggle Button. It may just be a regular hyperlink that says “SimLock Tool (Alpha)”. Click that.

  65. MacCmdr Says:

So when you say “unlocked” do you refer to “voice only” or “voice and data”? In my experience, with different levels of unlocking… all will allow voice usage on multiple networks. However, some leave the device crippled for data usage. Has anyone tried sending TXT/SMS or MMS using a Cingular (orange) SIM in an SMT 5600 that was originally locked to the ATTWS (blue) network?

  78. Erik Selberg Says:

You need to put in a SIM that is on the locked network.. say it’s locked to Cingular. You need to put in a Cingular SIM in first to get there.

Usually this step involves a friend who has a Cingular or T-Mobile SIM (those being the two big networks in the US).

  79. Debi Says:

  82. Jared Says:

Thank you Erik…I donated 100$ to the Red Cross. Everything is cool, but I cannot get the internet to work on the phone. It was locked to AT&T, and now is used with a Cingular SIM. Any Ideas??

    Thanks

  83. speed Says:

Cory: the % is the prompt. Type in “RapiConfig.exe /p ResetSecurity.xml” (and no quotes either, just what’s in them).

  84. speed Says:

Jared - not sure on the internet… my guess is that your access to the internet through GRPS was via AT&T, and you’ll probably need to change some internal settings to do it. But you can probably call Cingular and they’ll help you through it (BTW, I’d love to know, so please post when you find out!).

On the other hand, simply rebooting may be all that’s needed… that tried and true Windows trick…

  85. Cory Says:

Ok i finished all up and it said unlock, and now my cingular simcard works in my ATT Audiovox SMT 5600, but i get no service, and when i do get service and i make a call, no1 can hear me, then phone was purchased about 10 months ago and i resurrected it from my girlfriends closet

  86. Cory Says:

You there speed? im really having trouble. I finally found out how to master reset the phone. The master reset didnt take out the unlocked part of it so even though i master reset the phone my cingular sim card still works in it. but i still get low to none service and people hear 1 word out of every 20. And thats if i go outside of my room. My cingular Razor works in my room perfectly. But this ATT Unlocked phone with my cingular sim card doesnt want to let me talk.

  87. Erik Selberg Says:

The Razor and AudioVox will pick up different bands, and my guess is that the Cingular band the AudioVox is trying to sync to isn’t very good in your area (while the AT&T network is). I’m not sure exactly how to switch networks, but I believe it’s under Start -> Settings -> Phone or Start -> Settings -> Network.

  88. Jon Says:

My 5600 will not allow me to paste a file to the \storage\ files. It will allow me to paste to the storage card however. Any suggestions?
I have tried it with both my new Cingular sim card and my old at&t sim card.
    Thanks

  89. Erik Selberg Says:

Extract the files first, then paste them. Looks like you’re trying to copy straight from the ZIP, which doesn’t work.

  90. Blossom Says:

    Hi Erik,
I got my brother to get it to work with your instructions! Thank you! Now my issue is trying to access the internet through T-mobile. I heard some buzz that you can actually access the internet with just the t-zones (which I have) but some say you have to purchase the unlimited internet for $19.99. Either way, does anyone know what the proper settings need to be on this phone in order to access the internet?
    Blossom

  91. Elliott Says:

    Hello Erik,

Wow! Great job with your thorough instructions. Thanks so much; phone is working fine!

  92. Dre Says:

I need a cheap way to get my hands on a Cingular Sim Card!!! The problem is that i just purchased my 5600 (cingular locked) but i currently use an AT&T plan. Now I know your method works, but I need a cingular sim beacuase all my friends either have verizon or AT&t or T-Mobile!! (go figure). is there a cheap way i can get my hands on a Cingular SIM and either return it or but one for real cheap?? Please help me!!!

  93. T Says:

Any chance this would work on a ATT locked Moto MPX-220?

  94. Erik Selberg Says:

I don’t believe so… the SPV Services handles an Orange C500 / C550 (available in the UK) as well as the AudioVox, but doesn’t look like there’s an equivalent yet for Moto.

  95. chuck Says:

Erik, thanks for doing this! I do have two questions, I went through all the steps and it’s working but now I have a series of numbers listed at the top of the screen in the left hand corner of the phone (5 digits), is this my unlock code? Also, is it safe to go in and delete “Disable Security” file from following folder \Storage\Windows\Start Menu\ on my 5600? This was asked earlier but I didn’t see a response to it.

By the way, I went from a AT&T to Cingular.

  96. Erik Selberg Says:

What are the digits? And are they right below the buttons for the mMode where the carrier used to be? Chances are that’s just the numeric carrier ID as it doesn’t have the string (in this case, Cingular).

  97. Erik Selberg Says:

Oh yeah, and you can delete the DisableSecurity file, as it won’t work anyway once you reboot (as the \Temp directory is gone)

  98. Chuck Says:

The digits are 31041, not sure about the mMode but if you put your home screen layout as ‘Windows Simple’ (start-settings-home screen), then these digits are located right below the top blue bar and above the time stamp.

  99. rob Says:

i have a 5600 att using a cingular sim i cant get passed the unlock sim screen

  100. Erik Selberg Says:

You have to start with an AT&T SIM in the phone to unlock it.

  101. rnaik Says:

Help! I was able to put the Disable Security file in the start Menu but could not proceed with the next step. I just cant seem to get those two files in the TEMP folder - the compuer wouldnt let me.

  102. TomD Says:

Awesome! Worked like a charm. I missed my 5600 so much the last four months. Time to put the Razor in the closet for a while………..

    Thanks again~

  103. chuck Says:

Rnaik, did you extract the files from the ZIP file onto your computer and then try to copy & paste them? All of the files need to be physically placed on your computer and then you can move them to the designated folder (don’t open up the ZIP file and try and copy and paste from there). I just unlocked my phone yesterday without any problems.

  104. HiloTech Says:

Just what to add a big thanks for the info on the unlock. One note. If you buy a phone that is locked and it does not come with the sim card in it this will not work for you. I had a Cingular phone and wanted to change to the SMT 5600. Found it very reasonable priced on ebay. It said it was ATT locked. Which I thought would work since ATT and Cingular merged. No such luck. When I turned it on the only screen you get is the network lock page and it wants the unlock code. You can’t execute phase 1. I got lucky since I upgraded from ATT to Cingular and still had the old phones with a ATT sim in it. I put the ATT sim and got past the network lock screen. After that it just smooth. Pulled the ATT sim out put my Cingular sim in. Everything is fine. Thanks again.

  105. Ralph Says:

    Eric,

I have an Audiovox 5600 with an AT&T SIM. If I unlock the phone, I assume it’ll still work with the original AT&T SIM, correct?

  106. Ralph Says:

    Eric,

Nevermind. I just went thru the unlock procedure and everything went fine. I can now use AT&T and TMobile SIM chips with no problem. Thanks for putting everything in one place and giving clear instructions.

Looks like others did as well. Cert.lab is where it needs to be etc.

  110. Erik Selberg Says:

Are you sure you installed it? As that’s the only solution I’ve heard of (and have no idea if it works, frankly).

  111. Bill Says:

Erik, Please excuse me as I am an IDIOT and you are “DA MAN!!!!!” I began from the start again this morning and it worked PERFECT! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I would highly recommend that if anyone is having problems just reboot your machine and then start over again fresh. I installed it all correct but somthing just “didnt take” the 1st time. Thanks again Erik, $40.00 is on its way to the Red Cross.

  112. david roush Says:

  113. Anthony Says:

Thank you soo much. The only trouble I had was in phase one, where I put the shortcut in the start menu folder, and the aeconfig and disablesecurity in the temp. The shortcut didn’t show up, so I ended up having to use the file manager to run the aeconfig program. It was no big deal though. Actually easier that way anyhow. You should change the directions that way.
    Thank you so much.

  116. Volkmar Says:

Was running into the “Unknown error -2147467259 in read operation” error. It turned out that the registry key update for the RAPI failed. I just used the registry editor from http://www.spv-developers.com/forum/article.php?a=1 and toggled the values by hand (values are described in that posting as well). After that everything worked smoothly.

Thanks a lot for this web page. Cingular rejects unlocking phones from AT&T and suggested to buy a new one…

  117. Brooke Says:

2 phones, 2 tries, hard reboots and I keep getting this error “Unknown error -2147467259″
Both phones are att phones and I am using an original active att sim card. Should I try a different computer? Thanks, Brooke

  118. Josh Says:

    Erik,

I have tried this several times and can not get through step #5. When I type the command in DOS I get a message: Config failed (0×800700002): The system cannot find the file specified

I see where many people are having success so I am confident that this will work, I must be missing something but I don’t see what it is.

I have an AT&T phone/SIM that I would like to use with Cingular.

  119. Brooke Says:

Volkmar posted my answer just 1 hour before I posted my stupid question. Congrats on the find. I was able to unlock both of my ATT SMT500’s.

Eric if you want a short write up on how the reg editor works and how to get it to run I will write it up. Let me know.

Great site. Thanks for all the help.

  120. MacCmdr Says:

Erik, do you know if the imei number is permanently changed? I know that the early versions of the SPV software set the imei number to all zeros to unlock the phone. You can check the phone’s internal value of the imei by entering *#06#. The first 15 digits should match the number under the battery.

For everyone else, the SMT5600 can store different sets of settings for different data networks. Cingular’s settings can be found online. There are also adapters which allow you to use two different sim cards in one phone. You will need to trim your cards to fit…but it’s a slick mod.

  121. Josh Says:

I figured out what I needed to do! Instead of typing “C:\unlock5600\RapiConfig.exe /p resetsecurity.xml”

I needed to type “C:\unlock5600\RapiConfig.exe /p C:\unlock5600\resetsecurity.xml” You must enter the directory for BOTH files!

  122. Alok Says:

Thanks a lot for this. I have Cingular Blue network SMT5600 and I was able to finish this process in 2 mins. awesome! Now I think I can use this in India when I travel there later this year. Thanks a lot!!!

  123. Alma Cote Says:

Brilliant! Simply brilliant! I was one who didn’t read far enough where all my questioned had already been answered. I had the copy problem and made sure I “extracted” the files.. it worked. I had the problem with the error at the toggle button… just went through one more time and everything was fine. I really don’t have a grasp on what glitches I may get, but so far so good. Erik, you’re my second favorite hero. (I only have second favorites in everything so I can leave room for something else.. ) Thanks again!!! Cingular lied to me… hmmm, what a surprise…

  124. Alma Cote Says:

Erik, I unlocked my phone per your instructions. (Thank you!!) That was a couple of days ago. I have not been able to get onto the internet. I spent 102 minutes on the phone with Cingular and they were very patient, but we couldn’t get my phone to work. Voice calls and text messages are fine, but anything having to do with the internet just don’t work. I noted that a couple other people had the same problem, but I haven’t seen anyone respond back that they’ve resolved the issue. Have you since found a “woork around”? Thanks!

  125. ablazes Says:

This worked perfectly! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

One question: Can I remove all the files I installed on my phone and PC?

    Thanks again.

  126. Chris Whaley Says:

For all us former AT&T users that were being forced to buy new phones to switch to Cingular, this is the biggest blessing to a poor college kid. Worked like a charm and I’m now an official Cingular user on my previously AT&T 5600. Whoever wrote this, you are amazing.

  127. Jnyan Says:

    Great work!!

I followed all the steps and when i plugged my friends SIM, my AudioVox is asking me to Enter a Pin and press done….Looks like I only have 10 attempts….actually 9 now:)

Can someone please shed some light…..

  128. Jnyan Says:

  130. John Says:

Hi, I just bought a used SMT 5600 phone from ebay, put in my AT&T SIM, turned it on and got the message “Network is locked. Please input unlock code.” What does that mean? I thought these phones are designed to work with AT&T SIMs. Do I need a Cingular SIM (and not AT&T) for some type of SMT 5600? Will unlocking help me in this case? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  131. Erik Selberg Says:

You need a Cingular or T-Mobile SIM (whatever the phone was locked to from the guy you bought it from). You can then follow the instructions above to unlock it for your AT&T SIM.

  132. John Says:

Erik, you rock! I borrowed a Cingular SIM from a friend just as you suggested, followed the directions above and it worked the first try. Thanks a million!! I love the phone! And btw, this gives me another reason to donate.

  134. Paul Says:

Hey when i get to step 5 i get this message: ‘%’ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

what might i be doing wrong and how do i get past this?

  135. John Says:

Paul - The ‘%’ in step 5 only indicates the beginning of a command line but is not part of the command. So it should be omitted.

  136. Jen Says:

AMAZING! I got it to work first try. You are a genius, Erik. Thank you so much!

  142. Tytus Says:

I just used this to unlock a Cingular Audiovox SMT5600.
It worked perfectly. I was scared when in SPVServices.exe they tell you that you shouldn’t run it on an audiovox phone. But when I finally built up the courage to do it anyway, it unlocked my phone :-) The internet still works, the phone still works, and text messages still work. Fantastic !

  143. Tristan Says:

thanks so much. i had problems copying files onto the phone from the zip folder. problem solved by copying the files onto the desktop, then into the phone. my wife & i donated as requested. thanks again.

  144. Cheryl Says:

Have an ATT Wireless locked phone. Tried the above and everything seemed to work - at the end (SIM Unlock), it says the phone is unlocked. I did not have a non-ATT sim to check if it worked so I took it to a Cingular dealer and asked them to check it. They put in a Cingular sim but said it was still locked. Has anyone had this problem? If so, is there a workaround? Thanks.

    Hello,
I got the “Unknown error -2147467259 in read operation” first time but it worked the second time. Reason in my knowledge.
    1. After step 2.1. I did not see the “Disable Security” from my start menu. If you do not see it either Just restart the phone then follow the subsequent steps.

Erik, has done a great job in listing the steps. It rocks.

    Thanks,
    Ajay
P.S: I will contribute this part of donation to Katrina.:-)

  146. Ajay Kumar Says:

    Hello All,
I also got “Unknown error -2147467259 in read operation” error first time. However Later I realized that I did the step 2.3 wrong.
Since I could not see the “Disable Security.exe” from the start menu. I went through FILE-MANAGER. The mistake was instead of going to the START MENU directory, I went to /TEMP directory and ran “Disable Security.xml” in place of “Disable Security.exe”.

SOlution: Do it again. Reboot your phone and start all over.
    Enjoy,
    Ajay

Eric, this is truly a great thing you are doing for so many of us, who travel, etc. However I am runing into the exact same problem that other users are running into regarding the error code -2147467259. I have followed all of your steps to a “t” and still cannot move past this point. The cert.cab file installed fine in the /temp directory of the phone, where I succesfully launched it. It does then dissapear frm the directory, so I tried with and without it in the directory to cover all the bases. I am writting to you out of shear desperation, can you please help me out? If you have a chance please email me or call me +1.408.656.8253, I am in PA so I am on EST. I am a hugh Steelers fan (always have been), what do you think of Maddox, he is awfull. 151. Jake Says:

    Erik,
I recently purchased a Audiovox from Cingular.

I went thru all the steps then powered down the phone. as I did not have another SIM card to check I could not check it.

This morning I borrowed my co workers SIM card (he has a GO phone from T mobile).

When I pop the chip in it says ” NO service”

Do you think I goofed my steps somwehere? It was succesful all along.

  152. knotydreds Says:

MANY, MANY thanks for the awesome tutorial and one-stop zip files! To any doubters (as I was), this thing works flawlessly.

FU Cingular, I’m off to T-mobile!

    Cheers.

  153. Erik Selberg Says:

(omnibus reply… sorry for the delay in getting these through, had a server hiccup)

Cheryl — try it again. If it’s still locked, when you put in a different SIM, it’ll ask for some unlock code. Otherwise, you’re golden.

Vinod - yeah, same phone, different name. :)

Jake - looks like it worked. “NO SERVICE” means that the SIM can’t connect to the network, but since you got that far, it means the phone was accepting the SIM. I think GO phones from T-Mobile may have something weird that you have to register your phone on the network and can’t just swap SIMs without doing something, but I could be wrong. However, that’s the same message I saw when I plugged in a China Mobile SIM (which won’t connect in the US), so you should be OK.

  154. JM Says:

You are awesome. thanks a million and keep it up! nothing better than using the internet for what its made for.. free information sharing.

I have an SMT5600 that I am trying to unlock and its on the ATT network. I don’t have my old ATT sim card anymore and can’t find a friend who still has ATT. I was wondering if someone would be willing to send me an old or blank card that isn’t working to me so that I can quickly unlock my phone and then send the card back. I can provide you with all my information and everything. I would be willing to pay a couple of bucks to use it so email me at connorhays@gmail.com . Thanks -Connor

  159. Connor Says:

Nevermind, I will just get a blank one of ebay that isn’t activated. Will this procedure work if I pop in a ATT sim card that hasn’t been activated? Also, I have never used DOS so I don’t understand exactly what you do in Steps 4 and 5. Could someone explain to me how exactly to do this for someone who has never used DOS? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Hi

    Thanks a tonne!

I got my tmobile SIM card to work with this phone, but the network says Cingular and my phone is roaming. In the network setting, it finds only AT&T and Cingular networks and not the T-mobile network. But if I use the SIM card on my nokia phone, it works fine with the TMobile network.

Any idea how to get the phone to recognize T-Mobile network?

    Appreciate the help.

  167. Erik Selberg Says:

Obelix — go into Settings -> Phone -> Network. You should be able to manually select T-Mobile. You may also need to look in the menu of that screen to select T-Mobile as a visible network.

Anyway, ran these steps and it worked flawlessly. Popped in a Cingular SIM card and whola… I was now on the Cingular network.

A big thanks to you !! Followed the instructions and worked on the first try. The provider wouldnt provide the unlock code which would make my smartphone not so smart if i switched service. Thanks to you.

  186. Ian Says:

Cingular couldn’t find my unlock code but this worked first try. The instructions look a little confusing at first but I just printed them and went one by one. You da man!

  187. John Says:

I’ve taken all the steps to unlock my ATT Audiovox 5600 for use on Cingular, and everything has been just as Erick posted, UNTIL:

I launch the SPV program, click the “SIMLOCK” option, and type “AGREE” in the box, as directed. But then…nothing. The same screen just comes back up - so then I type “AGREE” again, and…nothing.

I’m running Win XP, and just recently installed IE 7 beta. Nothing unusual about my setup. Is this some kind of firewall issue?

I’m so close…yet so far…I can taste it.

Anyway, if anybody else has been stuck in the “AGREE” loop, in the very last step of the unlock, a solution or suggestion would be much appreciated!!

  188. UV Says:

    Erik, you rock….!!!

  189. Vik Says:

Awesome! This works like a charm. To do due diligence to your selflessness, I will contribute to the Katrina fund listed on the page. Thank you very much. U Rock!

  190. NJ Says:

What is the Password for SPVSERVICES???

  191. Danny Says:

It’s great. im using Cingular, when i put T mobile sim in then sometimes it’s work, Sometimes didno’t. i used manual configuation too, 10 times (1 time work) hihi. But thanx anyway.

  192. Adam Says:

IE7 Beta (Beta 2 in my care) is the issue. I had to uninstall the beta and run IE6 in order to unlock the phone. Hope this helps!

  193. anand Says:

I’ve the same problem as John above… any solutions?

  194. Pete Says:

I have an Audiovox SMT 5600….without a data cable( just ordered one it should be here in afew days)..I have a memory card but no origanal sim card……I have an activated nextel card. can I still unlock the 5600?

  195. Erik Selberg Says:

If you have a laptop with infra-red, that should also work. Or you can buy a miniSD card (which you probably want anyway to store pictures / mp3s) with SD adapter and copy files to / from that (requires a SD card reader). Or just buy a USB A < -> USB B cable for like $15.

  196. Oliver Says:

Thx Erik for pulling all this together! I’m leaving tomorrow to travel to Central & South America and am hoping the unlocked phone will enable me to use SIM cards from the local networks.

I do want to confirm what Adam mentions above: SPVservices.exe doesn’t seem to work with IE7 beta 2, thus getting in the way of steps 10-11. The experience is exactly as John describes in that you can’t get past the “AGREE” screen. I uninstalled IE7, rebooted my PC and the phone, started the instructions from scratch, and everything worked fine! :)

  197. Sal Says:

I am having difficulty accessing the internet on my phone, I tried the instructions given by Alma Cote, however they did not work. I am wondering if anyone else has issues with using the internet after unlocking an At&t locked phone. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated as this will decide whether or not I will purchase a new phone.

  198. tako Says:

    Worked like a charm!
    mucho gracias!

  199. wacko Says:

it worked like a charm……no problem at alll……its the best ever…………………i got a audiovox smt5600 from rogers whihc wont be on roger anymore.lol….its really easy…thanks a ton…i will donate money just cuz of this….

  200. Kenny C Says:

I’m having trouble with steps 4 and 5. I have never used dos and need some clear concise instructions. I am going from att to cinguar. When i type in “cmd” i only get c:\documents and settings. Dont know where to go from here. Any help is appreciated. Ken

  201. A Colino Says:

I am not able to copy any files between my computer and the phone. I have unzipped the downloads and I can “see” the phone (connected with USB cable). The ActiveSync help says that some devices are not able to copy files …. Is there another way to get the files onto your phone to go through the process.

This is a relatively new phone (legacy AT&T) and has not been used for email so this is the first time hooking it up to the computer. Any hopes of getting it to work with a Cingular SIM? Is there anyone who has ever gotten the unlock code?

  202. A Colino Says:

I unzipped on a different computer and made sure to put the files in a different folder and it worked. Thanks for all the notes! It helped to read that % was the prompt and not something I was to type in DOS! THANK YOU!

  203. Stef Says:

Thank you so much! Your instructions worked flawlessly. I had a new Cingular Audiovox 5600, got a Cingular SIM, unlocked it and now I can use with Rogers in Canada!

  204. Bontte Says:

Your info is super, I got thru like a breeze. Thank you so much! The only thing I would like to point out is that on the DOS prompt shold be c:/unlock5600 and do not type % when running the RapiConfig. Other than that the whole instruction is fabulous!

  205. knotydreds Says:

Will this work with the new Windows Mobile 5 smartphones?

  206. Brianmickey Says:

Will this work with the new Cingular 2125?

  207. Erik Selberg Says:

As far as I know, no, this won’t work on the new 2125 or other Windows Mobile 5 smartphones. Sorry guys!

  208. Jeff Says:

I was an AT&T customer that was recently forced to change to Cingular and definately wanted to keep my Audiovox 5600 from AT&T. These instructions were clear and consise, and everything worked just right the very first time. This was a fantastic solution.

    Thanks very much for sharing!

  209. Joel Says:

This whole “locking” thing is pure evil - Ba humbug!

Erik you rock for bringing factual goodness to the masses. Instructions worked like a charm on my Audiovox SMT5600. Now the wife (who has a new Cingular phone) and I can maintain a family plan, even though I got one of “those” AT&T phone. Cingular was going to force me to ditch my 6 month old phone in favor of a sparkling new cingular unit because they can’t handle putting a Cingular and an AT&T phone on the same plan.

    Thanks again

  210. sunny Says:

i got a cingular 5600 but i only have a tmob sim card so i need to get a cing sim in order for this to work?

  211. Donny Bahama Says:

Didn’t work for me. Unlocked it at home last night; everything went smoothly & it said it was unlocked. This morning at work, I borrowed a friend’s T-Mobile SIM card. When my phone powered up, it gave me a circle with a diagonal line through it where the signal strength should’ve been. :(

  212. Kris Says:

Hi - I’m having a problem at the very end. When I run the spv app, I get a blank application. I’m assuming you run this from your computer not your phone and that the data entry would show up on your computer, not your phone, right? It took me awhile to figure out I was supposed to be linked to a web site. I have my browser defaulted to Firefox. Is this why it’s blank?

thanks for your efforts. Are the instructions at SPV (which are shorter) as effective do you think?

I’m going to restart everything just to see if changing the htm default made a difference…

  213. Sam Says:

thank you very much, worked great!

  214. StantonR Says:

I have a question that is a little off the “unlocked” subject, but to use the help of a captive audience…
I bought an Avox 5600 a month or so back on ebay (Cingular account already). It worked great for about a month then suddenly it is in “flight mode”. I had never put it in flight mode (or thought about that feature). When I try to take it out of flight mode, there are no other menu choices but to stay in flight mode. This renders the phone part of it useless. Any ideas?

  215. bum Says:

I bought an Audiovox SMT5600 locked to AT&T but it came with no sim card. Is it possible to unlock with it, and if not, where can I get one other than from a friend?

  216. vanessa Says:

you are THE BEST! this worked ‘like a charm’ on my first try!! thank you very much I LOVE my phone!

  217. Hein Says:

weird but I still get the not digitally signed error when trying to copy unsigned apps to the phone after following the steps above

  218. cw Says:

everything appeared to work except the final phase. i have repeated the steps a few times with no success. can anyone explain how the final step worked for them? i.e. clicking on the spv -services.exe file the app starts, i click the link on the left, “sim lock tool”, type agree and click “login” it refreshes the page but nothing seems to happen. the net result is the phone still gives me the prompt: network locked. Has anyone got any tips or ideas as to what i might be missing? all steps prior seem to make sense and work correctly…
    help :)

  219. cw Says:

aaahhh figured it out thanks to Oliver (i was using ie7 beta 2) i tried with ie 6 and it works… cheers - and thanks.

  220. Eric Says:

Thank you so much for doing this. Proof it has been a long, long while since I played with DOS. I got this to work once so I know your program does the trick. But somehow locked it again to Cingular and I’m stuck at the DOS stage…..What, exactly do I type in, because DOS says % is not a recognized command…Thank you so much.
    Eric.

  221. BRM Says:

I also managed to get my 5600 unlocked, after hitting the read error and following the link from Van above.

Next question: Can I re-enable application security now that my phone is unlocked? If so, any tips on how to do so?

    Thanks!!

  222. Tom Says:

Works like a charm - so far. After unlocking I was still able to call from Cingular network, and then borrowed a friends’ T-Mobile card and was able to call on that, too! I did get a little scared when the Cingular logo splash screen came up and it said no network, but after a couple of seconds it showed T-Mobile and I was able to call.

    Thanks Erik!

[...] Erik Selberg posted a download and step-by-step instructions on how to unlock your Audiovox SMT5600 Windows SmartPhone. This worked like a charm for my previously Cingular-locked phone, and now I can get a SIM card from a local carrier when I go abroad and make local calls! [...]

  224. Joe C Says:

I unlocked my AT&T SMT5600 and it worked fine. However, the network is stuck at Cingular. I tried removing Cingular from the preferred network list but the Phone still cannot find the T-mobile network with a T-mobile SIM in the phone. Any ideas? Am I roaming to Cingular? Do I need to change any other settings? Thanks in advance.

  225. carter Says:

Thanks for the posting, I have been through the process and keep getting the “2147467259 in read operation” error. All steps prior to this work - i.s the phone is app unlocked, etc just can’t get through the final stage!!!

Does anyone know how to get around this? I have installed cert.cab and the phone acknowledges it is installed correctly - so I’m at a dead end! Any suggestions / links are appreciated…

  226. Sorrellum Says:

Thank you SO much for this tool. I have been DESPERATE to unlock my 5600 since I got it, as I travel to Europe a lot and rely on the sync with my Outlook for everything. I paid to get the unlock tool from some dodgy website and it failed - and depite many emails and so forth I just gave up in the end.

This worked immediately and instructions were clear and straightforward.
I donated some Katrina money in your name - thanks again.

  227. Zeke Says:

Does anyone have the registry changes that are mentioned in the link to spv-developers? I can’t access the post and I registered an account.

Excellant posting though! I wish I would have found this before I unlocked my 1st SMT5600 for $35.

  228. Matthew Says:

Thank you very much for this excellent write up i’m happily using my 5600 on T-mobile now :-)

  229. DERRICK Says:

WOW!!!! Thank you so very much. This really worked exactly like you said it would. Now I can use my SMT 5600 on Cellular One!!!

  230. Adam P Says:

    ERIK SELBERG ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m donating some money, like Erik asked, to thank him for his help.

I can’t believe that people charge money to do this for others (probably using Erik’s directions too!).

    Thanks!

  231. scott Says:

    Thanks dude!

Works as advertised w/no hiccups during the install.

I’ll donate some money to La. Rep Jefferson to put in his freezer…

  232. Leo Says:

I received the Unknown error -2147467259 in read operation, but I can’t view the thread you linked on how to resolve this. Is there any chance you could send that to me or post it on this website? Or is there another way to get past this problem? Thanks

  233. Leo Says:

Just kidding. I retried all the steps and the unlock was a success. Great website, thanks for all the help.

  234. Yemi Says:

Guys tried the process and it worked perfect. Great resource, kudos to the website, shame on cingular. Thanks guys…

  235. Lane Says:

I have followed Erik’s directions and have been able to download the temp and start menu files to the phone using active sync. The problem I am having is that I cannot access the files from my phone because the phone is not allowing me to enter the windows mode. It brings up the unlock window and will not let me do anything else on the phone until I unlock it. The phone was on the AT&T network. Can anyone help with this problem, please? Thanks!

  236. Chris Em Says:

Thank you so much!! I have a real issue with purchasing ‘locked phones’. It rates up there with this Eminent Domain horror… your directions were excellent. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

  237. VanDamme Says:

Thank you. I managed to unlock Rogers Wireless phone (Canada) without any problems. Please note that the SPV client will not work if you have IE7 installed. After clicking on Login button nothing happens (Step 10).

  238. Lane Says:

Yeah, VanDamme. I have encountered that problem, too. Is there a way around it? If not, does anyone know of a right way to unintall Internet Explorer 7?

  239. VanDamme Says:

I had to use a different PC with IE6 to finish the unlocking procedure. I do not know any way around IE7 issue.

  240. TomL Says:

I can open all the file and move the data to the correct folders on my SMT5600. However when I try to go to the phone home screen on the SMT5600 to use the “start” key the home page appears and is immediately replaced with a screen asking for the network unlock code. Advice?

    Thanks,

    Tom

  241. Michael Reaves Says:

I am made whole once again! I was a “victim” of the ATT and Cingular merger and lost use of my Audiovox 5600 about 90 days after purchasing it. My wife freaked out when a sales person at Cingular told her our cell phones were going to be “phased out”. She immediately signed up with new contracts and got 2 new “free” phones. She meant well….. at least that’s what I told my attorney (just kidding). I’ve been using the SMT as a $250 digital rolladex ever since.

I made my first call with my Unlocked SMT 5600 5 minutes ago! AMAZING!!!

Thanks a million….. down with locked phones!

    Michael
